Suggested Language for a Bequest

Gifts to Georgetown Prep through a will or living trust can be made for a specific amount, a percentage of an estate’s assets, the entire or a portion of residue left of an estate after other bequests are made, or specific assets.

Sample language follows for the most common types of bequests.

Percentage:
“I give _____ percent (____%) of the residue of my estate to Georgetown Preparatory School, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD 20852 for the general use and purposes of the School.”

Specific Amount:
“I give the sum of _______ dollars ($_____) to Georgetown Preparatory School, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD 20852 for the general use and purposes of the School.”

Entire Residue:
“I give to Georgetown Preparatory School, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD 20852 all the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate.”

Specific Assets:
Individuals are encouraged to contact the Office of Gift Planning if a gift of personal or tangible property is being considered.

Unrestricted gifts to Georgetown Preparatory School are appreciated and will be directed to the most pressing needs of Prep at the time the gift is received. While unrestricted gifts allow Prep to allocate funds to areas of greatest need, bequests may be designated for a particular purpose or use by a specific division, program, or activity. In order to ensure that the evolving educational needs of future generations of students are met, it is advisable to include the following language with restricted gifts:

“In the event that at some future time due to changed circumstances, in the judgment of Georgetown Preparatory School’s Board of Trustees, it becomes impractical to apply my bequest to the designated purpose(s), the Georgetown Preparatory School Board of Trustees shall make such modifications as will appropriately recognize my interests in coordination with its priorities.

Please contact John Coyle, Executive Director, The Haas Society, at jcoyle@gprep.com or (301) 214-8634, Cell: (240) 319-5824, to start a conversation. When the bequest provision is finalized, donors are encouraged to send a copy of the portion of the document pertaining to the estate gift, along with contact information of the estate representative, to John Coyle, Executive Director, The Haas Society, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD 20852. Sharing your plans will allow us to thank you for your generous foresight and welcome you to join the Haas Society, our donor recognition society for individuals who have made estate provisions or other planned gifts, and receive possible gift credit.

Thank you.
